A collaborative acoustic monitoring initiative in support of a healthy Pacific coast.

Vision

Our Vision

Noise pollution from anthropogenic sources is a pervasive threat to our oceans' ecosystems, and current monitoring efforts are disparate. NoiseTracker aims to unite all hydrophone operators throughout the northwest Pacific coast in a common effort to inform the public about anthropogenic noise, and empower local communities and organizations to make decisions and policies that reduce its environmental impacts.

Coming in 2024...

The NoiseTracker online platform will provide a holistic, standardized and collaborative approach to monitoring underwater noise.

Map Outine of the Northwest Pacific Coast

Platform Features

01 / NOISE TREND VISUALIZATION

A dynamic, map-based noise visualization tool will allow the public to see simple ocean noise metrics in near real-time at monitoring sites along the west coast of Canada and the United States.

02 / ACOUSTIC DATA ANALYSIS

Further acoustics analysis will be offered to hydrophone operators through a password-protected area, allowing for tracking long-term noise trends and collaboration with other data gatherers in the region.

03 / OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

Our comprehensive Education Hub and community outreach programs will provide free resources to engage and inform the public on the complexities of underwater noise, and empower champions of our oceans.

Who Is It For?

NoiseTracker will serve as an invaluable resource on long-term ocean noise trends  in the region. With a range of noise trend data available, the platform will appeal to:

→ Territorial Stewards

→ Policymakers

→ Research Scientists

→ Non-profit Organizations

→ Local and Federal Governments

→ Educators

→ Students

→ Members of the General Public

Education Hub

NoiseTracker's Education Hub will be a comprehensive resource for all things ocean noise. The content will appeal to all ages - from early learners to graduates - aimed at anyone interested in learning more about underwater acoustics, noise pollution, mitigation measures and scientific monitoring techniques.

Our Science of Underwater Noise and Disturbance (SOUND) toolkit is designed to provide educators teaching grades 1-3 with engaging and hands-on activities to reinforce learning on this complex topic.

Removin Barriers

Lowering Barriers to Entry

Acoustic monitoring projects can be expensive to implement and maintain. The NoiseTracker platform will be easy to use, accessible and completely free of charge. We are committed to lowering barriers to entry for those with an interest in collaborative acoustic monitoring, in support of healthy oceans. As a hydrophone operator, you will:

✓ Retain full ownership of your raw data.

✓ Have full control over the data and information displayed to the public.

✓ Have access to free, secure and exportable noise trend analyses for your hydrophone sites.

✓ Be connected to other operators with similar monitoring goals and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of noise pollution.
